How the NSW 3-for-1 Logbook Scheme Works — And How to Use It

What is the NSW 3-for-1 logbook scheme?

The 3-for-1 logbook scheme is an NSW Government initiative that allows learner drivers under 25 to count every hour of professional driving instruction as 3 hours in their logbook.

This means that instead of supervising family members for all 120 hours of required driving practice, learners can dramatically reduce that burden by booking lessons with an accredited driving instructor.

Who is eligible?

To qualify for the 3-for-1 scheme you must:

  • Hold a current NSW learner licence
  • Be under 25 years of age at the time of the lesson
  • Complete lessons with an accredited professional driving instructor
  • Have your logbook signed by the instructor at the end of each lesson

The scheme applies to a maximum of 10 hours of professional instruction — meaning you can log up to 30 hours through the scheme.

How does it work in practice?

Here is a simple example. Say you complete a 10-hour package with L Plus P Driving School. Your instructor signs your logbook after each lesson. Those 10 hours of real driving count as 30 logbook hours — the equivalent of 30 hours of supervised practice with a parent or guardian.

This means instead of needing 120 hours of supervised practice from scratch, you effectively only need 90 more hours after completing a 10-hour package with us.

How to record it correctly

At the end of every lesson your instructor will sign your paper logbook or the Service NSW logbook app. Make sure you:

  • Record the exact start and end time of each lesson
  • Have your instructor sign each entry
  • Note the ×3 multiplier column in the logbook — this is where the 3-for-1 hours are recorded separately from your private practice hours

Which package gets you the most logbook hours?

Our 10-hour package ($550) is the most popular for exactly this reason. It gives you:

  • 10 hours of structured, professional driving instruction
  • 30 logbook hours recorded (the maximum allowed under the scheme)
  • Priority scheduling across all 24 suburbs we cover
  • Free pick-up and drop-off from your home, school, or workplace

The 5-hour package ($275) gives you 15 logbook hours — a good starting point if you already have some hours logged.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use the 3-for-1 scheme if I am over 25?
No. The scheme only applies to learner drivers who are under 25 years of age at the time of the lesson.

Does it apply to all driving schools?
Only accredited professional driving instructors can sign off on 3-for-1 hours. L Plus P Driving School instructors Mick and Sidra are both fully accredited.

Is there a limit to how many 3-for-1 hours I can log?
Yes — the maximum is 10 hours of professional instruction, giving you a maximum of 30 logbook hours through the scheme.

Can I combine 3-for-1 hours with private practice hours?
Yes. Most students combine both. You log your 30 scheme hours with us and then complete the remaining 90 hours with a supervising driver.
